Understanding God’s Sovereignty: Rest and Trust in His Perfect Plan
Rev. Sharon Colgin

One thing that you can count on is that life is not easy, and as we journey through the different seasons of our lives, the moments, the years, God model in Genesis two, something for each one of us. Rest. Rest is important. We need to replenish our bodies and our minds. God wants us to experience not only the physical rest, but also the mental rest. Now, God didn’t need the rest, but you know what? He’s a show and tell kind of God. You think about all the lessons and things that God has done. It’s a lot of visual things that are involved when he’s trying to give us models to go by as we do life.

God wants us to bask in his comfort, a place where we can find God, where we can put aside all the earthly, the worldly things and distractions that come bombarding at us all the time. God wants us to be able to focus on him, not only to see him feel his presence, but also to hear his voice. And guess what? God has a plan for his people. He has a plan for us. A perfect plan.

My question to you is this, do you know his sovereignty, or do you know of his sovereignty? Two different questions and two different responses.

by definition, sovereignty is supreme power, great dominant power. And if you put it in context of this, God’s word, sovereignty, is God has absolute authority over all things. That’s his identity. That’s who he is. His presence as creator of all things, his authority as king of kings and lord of lords. God is in control. To put it in layman’s term, he’s got your back.

Times, you might not think it, but he’s got your back. We all go through life different circumstances, different reactions, but nothing changes when it comes to God’s sovereignty. Nothing. He’s all knowing. He’s all powerful. He’s limitless in all of his glory. He gives us choices. Can you imagine? God gives us choices when he’s got all that going for him, and he says, “hey, I love you so much. I’m going to give you a choice. Not one, but more than one. In fact, I’m going to give you a lifetime of choices.” And yet, with the choices, he holds us accountable. We go back to that thing I just said a minute ago. God’s got a plan for his people.

I strongly believe every single thing that’s hit me up until this day has been in preparation for me to get through this day. And then tomorrow, everything that I’ve gone through up until tomorrow is getting me prepared to deal with tomorrow. So whether you’ve gone through illness, whether you’ve gone through financial problems, whether you’ve gone through breaks in relationships, whether you’ve gone through physical things, mental things, whatever, God has used that time as a time of preparation to help further his kingdom.
